About Ash Creativity
I am an artist and creative craft worker, at present creating in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. I am surrounded by the natural world – watching the seasons and the Earth with all her many facets.
Anne is the name I carry from my birth, Shaw I have adopted from my mothers line and is part of who I am as I work, Hewitt is the name I carry that I pass on to my children.
So, as we all weave the fabric of humanity through our lives, have I also learned to spin, weave and stitch the part of our lives that keeps us warm, graces our homes and speaks to us of inner things.
I am learning to respect again the skills, often classed throughout history as ‘the work of women’, it being my heartfelt wish that such skills do not dwindle and die, lost in the mechanics of our modern world.
I hope that they begin to live again and become part of our current lives and that they be afforded the respect they so rightly deserve.
Because I am born to these isles I am beginning to try and work with sources and materials that are inherent to this part of the world – our plants and animals, our native myths and legends, swirling celtic designs.
I hope to open peoples’ eyes to what has been, and can be again, with relevance to our lives now, a natural part of the fabric of their lives here – an inheritance that should not be lost through the passing satisfaction of a cheap purchase. To support the ‘community’ to which you are a part makes the ‘fabric’ strong.
In doing ‘womens work’ I hope to express the feminine balance to our lives and to explore the beauty of these ‘crafts’, to follow the ‘art’ that is within. A tactile world that expresses so many things – warmth, comfort, memories, nature, legends and the spirit that echoes around this fractured land.
